Shia Muslims have, for the past 1,300 years, been following the ritual of hurting themselves during Ashura, which falls on the 10th day of the first month of Muharram (month of mourning) in the Islamic calendar. Ashura, a 10-day-long event, commemorates the death of Prophet Mohammad's grandson, Imam Hussein, who was killed in the 7th century battle of Kerbala.

As part of the procession, they take part in self-flagellation.

Today in Kabul Shia Muslims were attacked by a suicide bomber. The spokesman of a Pakistani militant group, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, claimed responsibility for the attack. Police have reported 59 deaths and more than 130 casualties were admitted to hospitals across Kabul.
